Melaporkan harapan, niat, dan janji

Saat melaporkan suatu harapan, niat, atau janji, kita menggunakan kata kerja yang melaporkan (reporting verb) yang sesuai, diikuti oleh klausa that dengan kata would atau klausa to-infinitive. Kata kerja yang digunakan dalam pola ini adalah: hope, promise, threaten, guarantee, dan swear. Perhatikan bahwa kata that bersifat opsional (dapat dihilangkan) saat menggunakan klausa that, seperti contoh pertama di bawah ini.

"Give me the keys to the safe or I'll shoot you!" he shouted.	He threatened to shoot me if I didn't give him the keys to the safe. ATAU He threatened that he would shoot me if I didn't give him the keys to the safe.
"I will not tell anyone your secret" he said.	He swore that he would not tell anyone my secret. ATAU He swore not to tell anyone my secret.
